Charting a New Path in Network Engineering
Chris Murray: Applied Curiosity
From mechanical systems to network infrastructure, I apply curiosity and disciplined problem solving to networking solutions.
A Journey of Transformation
From bicycle mechanics to network engineering, my career has been driven by curiosity and a love of problem solving. I’ve always been drawn to understanding how systems work, whether that’s designing and machining a custom tool to solve a niche problem or troubleshooting network connectivity. My self-taught approach and hands on experience have equipped me with a unique perspective. I see networks as infrastructure that needs to be built right, maintained well, and continuously improved.
My Projects
Speed Test Server
I set up a self-hosted speed test server using Open Speed Test to measure both LAN and WAN network speeds while gaining hands-on experience with hosting my own services.
Tools and Skills Used
- Open Speed Test
- Proxmox
- Nginx Proxy Manager
- Domain Name DNS Records
AWS Hosted DNS Server
Hosted a recursive DNS server with Unbound on AWS to learn DNS and cloud deployment.

Tools and Skills Used
- AWS Cloud Hosting
- Unbound DNS
Smart Ping
I developed SmartPing, a lightweight network latency monitor inspired by SmokePing, to explore network monitoring concepts and practice using agentic Ai tools for automation and software development.
